wildlife-watching
Spanning the world’s largest archipelago, right on the equator with countless isolated islands across three zoogeographical zones, Indonesia is one of the most biodiverse countries on earth. Hosting the largest rainforests outside the Amazon & the Congo, the country’s wild spaces pulse with life. From its myriad of island jewels, to its lofty volcanoes and peaks, endless charismatic & unique forms are to be found. Much of Indonesia’s wildlife is iconic, with tigers, orangutans & rhinos in the west to Komodo Dragons & Sulawesi’s bizarre endemic wildlife such as Tarsiers, Babirusa & Maleo in the centre of the archipelago to Papua’s Birds-of-Paradise, Tree kangaroos and Echidnas in the east. However, Indonesia’s variety is endless, with forests full of butterflies the size of birds, carnivorous pitcher plants hiding in the undergrowth, and obscure mammals, barely known to science, living out secret lives. New species are constantly being discovered & re-discovered across the archipelago, from remote islands to isolated peaks. It is one of the few countries on earth where new birds & mammals are found with some regularity. Whether you would like to add a trip into the wild onto your Indonesian itinerary or you would like to mount an expedition to try and find a long-lost rat on top of a remote mountain we can arrange this for you. However you decide to venture off the beaten path, Indonesia’s stunning natural heritage is without a doubt going to leave an ever-lasting impression. Please view more in-depth information about wildlife-watching in the different regions of Indonesia with some sample itineraries below and also some information about more targeted wildlife-watching.
