Birding
With over 1,400 species, Indonesia is one of the world’s premier birding locations. With around 650 endemics, more than anywhere else on earth, and traversing 3 biogeographic regions with countless island specialties, this ginormous archipelago draws enthusiasts from around the world to try and glimpse its often enigmatic & spectacular bird-life. In the west we find emblematic Sundaic species such as Hornbills, Pheasants, Trogons & Broadbills joined by a host of rare & secretive endemics in the mountains & hills. Wallacea, formed of the central islands holds a dizzying array of unique forms. The east is Australasian in origin and consequently is packed with Birds-of-Paradise, Parrots and some of the most spell-binding mountain avifauna found on earth. Rampant habitat destruction, poaching and the bird trade have made many of Indonesia’s special birds hard to find, however all over the archipelago are people fighting for their protection, making new discoveries and becoming world-class guides, embracing eco-tourism as a tool for conservation & improving sustainable livelihoods. A Birding trip to Indonesia can be anything from a simple day trip to sample it’s biodiversity or to see a particular species as part of your holiday, a planned, week-long endemic grab in established reserves with good accommodation, or a month long expedition into its deep rugged mountains & remote islands to see things that few have before. Below is a brief description of each region we visit, plus some sample itineraries to give you a taste of what there is too discover, no matter where you want to go birding in Indonesia, let us know in the form below and we can start planning your next adventure with excellent local guides with proven success, happy birding!
