Birding Lesser sundas
The Lesser Sundas are one of Indonesia’s most endemic rich regions, as the islands stretch to the east, they become ever drier and more isolated. They share their affinities with Australasia & the wider Wallacean region, with many Parrots, Pigeons, Oriole’s & Honeyeaters. The whole region shares many endemics, nearly 60, and then each island or island group holding it’s own share of unique species. This equals nearly 100 birds that can only be seen here, making it an essential region for visiting birders. There is other diversity apart from birds, from the misty mountain forests of Flores to the rolling hills of Sumba & the rocky savannahs of Timor, it is a fascinating region to explore, with charismatic species such as cockatoos, pittas, many owls & beautiful fruit doves. This quintessential area of Indonesia also hold’s new discoveries with many new species being described from the little visited forests of Alor & Rote, & indeed a new parrotfinch from the highest reaches of Timor, add to this some very endangered species such as Citron-crested Cockatoo, Sumba Hornbill & Flores Hawk Eagle & you have a world-class birding adventure not to be missed.
