Sulawesi

One of the world's most complex and oddly shaped islands, Sulawesi is full of mystery, & how beautiful a mystery to discover with jaw dropping landscapes everywhere you look among world-class dive sites, forests hiding a fauna all their own & resiliant cultures boasting fabulous architecture and archaelogical sites.

The eccentricity of Sulawesi starts with its bizarre shape, described as an orchid by some or a ‘K’ by others, its complex geological history has led to a wonderous natural experiment. With landmasses from both east and west colliding with areas rising from the sea, it is the largest island in Wallacea, a region defined by a mixture of Asian & Australian fauna & flora and an endemic element all its own. Gorgeous & charismatic island jewels surround its main landmass, each with a defining endemic element themselves, with many unique & poorly known mammals & birds often amongst stunning landscapes & coral reefs. No self-respecting birder can miss Sulawesi, sharing nearly 100 endemics with it’s satellite islands featuring many spectacular species such as Knobbed hornbill, Maleo, many colourful kingfishers and an entire montane bird community all it's own, even a casual visitor to these islands will experience some of its wonderous bird diversity, birds can be quite confiding here providing excellent views and photographic opportunities. This island is very much like an Asian Madagascar, its long isolation and bizarre formation resulting in many novel forms. Like Madagascar it has many endemic primates, of two lineages, the macaques and the tarsiers. Each corner of the island and many of its offshore islands has it’s own forms. Larger beasts come in the form of the incomparable Babirusa and the dwarf buffalo, the Anoa, both are rare and secretive but can be searched for in remote forest areas, providing an experience straight out of National Geographic. It’s woolly, extensive mountain ranges harbour strange rodents, pygmy tarisers & the mysterious and rarely seen giant civet, the island’s largest predator. It's kaleidoscopic reefs are world famous, and many are well catered to for a diving trip, other’s are still being explored. Muck diving is best here with endless strange creatures found in the shallows. From pygmy seahorses to whale sharks, Sulawesi is an unmissable destination for any diver/snorkeller. Sulawesi’s peoples & cultures are as unique & eccentric as the island’s wildlife, with the boat building Bugis of the south, Asia’s most feared pirates of old. The Minahassa of the north with their war dances and ‘intriguing’ diets, the Bajo sea gypsies living in their floating villages & of course the infamous Torajans of the mountains, providing a truly surreal cultural experience with elaborate funeral rights, hanging burial sites & beautiful traditional architecture.
