Sumatra
Some of the world's most iconic species still roam in Sumatra's vast national parks, and we have the local guides to help try & find them. Epic landscapes of volcanoes, waterfalls & some of the world's best birding awaits..
A broody giant. The 6th largest island in the world, nearly 1,800km long with some of Indonesia's tallest volcanoes, most prominent cultures and rarest creatures. Sumatra stands proud against the Indian ocean and the rest of the archipelago. A true undiscovered gem of South-east Asia, this rugged, huge island offers wonderful rural landscapes & cultural homelands amidst vast national parks hosting some of the world's most important landscapes for Tigers, Orangutans, Asian Elephants & the Sumatran Rhino. Apart from being a precarious stronghold for these iconic species, Sumatra also hosts a highly endemic bird fauna, especially in it's mountains, and a whole suite of Sundaic specialties. Whilst mammals are secretive, surprises award patience & many endemic primates are found across the island with unique reptiles and amphibians continuing to be discovered and rediscovered. Modern progress has struck hard on the island with huge swathes of habitat cleared for development but much of its remaining wilderness has some of the most outstanding value in South-east Asia. Island's off it's coast boast their own unique endangered species and megalithic cultures. Visiting these wonderous landscapes and discovering its diversity through local guides & conservation initiatives only promotes it's protection for the future.
