Lesser Sundas
Like a string of jewels spreading east from Bali, in some of the world's most productive seas, each island holds its own unique surprises, however all have breathtaking scenery, wildlife and cultures unchanged.
Some born of fire, others ancient, far-flung pieces of the Australian landmass. The Lesser Sundas are one of the most charismatic regions of Indonesia, most islands are noticeably drier than further north resulting in distinctive and spellbinding scenery. Starting with Sumbawa, little-visited but featuring adrenaline-inducing adventures such as ginormous volcanic craters & swimming with whale sharks. Moving east to Komodo with some of the world’s most gorgeous island landscapes, fabulous trekking, breath-taking underwater action and of course the infamous dragons which prowl the hills & beaches. Then Flores with its everchanging volcanic lakes and montane rainforests, east of here is all about diving & exploring, both of which hold excellent opportunities. To the south lie rolling Sumba with stunning waterfalls, sandalwood forests and intimate cultural experiences. Timor, a land most tied with Australia is right off the beaten track & gorgeous Rote, the most southern Indonesian island with excellent beaches, accommodation, world-class surfing & diving. The region boasts high endemism in regards to their birdlife, with each major island boasting a whole suite of unique species, usually of an Australian affinity. Smaller islands often have a few endemic species too, many newly discovered, especially owls, fantails & myzomelas. Highly sought after species include Cockatoos, parrots, kingfishers & pittas. All our birding tours of the Lesser Sundas target all endemics of the area visited. This is one of the best regions of Indonesia to experience local cultures, with fascinating villages with their own unique architecture, textiles and practices. Any visit to the interiors of Sumba, Timor or Flores will provide an enthralling and immersive cultural experience. Outer islands such as Alor are less visited but no less captivating. From the whale sharks of Sumbawa, fantastic underwater landscapes of Rote, the dizzyingly diverse reefs of Alor, with many cetacean sightings and dedicated dugong tours to the infamous Komodo islands with mantas and world class drift diving with many pelagics.
