Sumatra is a world-class birding destination. Nearly the size of Spain, this huge island is the most biologically influenced by mainland South-east Asia in Indonesia and therefore holds an impressive swathe of Sundaic specialties, including 9 species of Hornbill, many Broadbills and Trogons & other spectacular & often secretive forest birds. However, due to its rugged, mountainous spine, it also holds many endemics, over 30 species, of which some are some of the most enigmatic birds on earth. Schneider’s Pitta & Sumatran Ground-Cuckoo were hitherto unknown, and presumed extinct in recent history, however now can be easily seen by those who make the journey. Many of the endemics are from sort after families such as pheasants, partridges, a trogon, a cochoa & many babblers & Bulbuls. Due to the island’s affinities to nearby Borneo & Java, Sumatra also holds over 10 near endemics, some of which are best seen here, add to that the many endemics and specialties found on the island’s off Sumatra’s west coast & some of the world’s best night birding, it’s easy to see why any self-respecting birder, or those just interested in tropical biodiversity make a trip to this mega diverse island. Development has not been kind to Sumatra’s fragile eco-system, however it still hold’s vast wild spaces, from swamps to high mountains & still some precious lowland jungle, making up some of South-east Asia’s most important reserves.
