Sitting beneath the Sundaic giants of Borneo & Sumatra and sat at the start of the great string of islands of the Lesser Sundas, Java harbours a remarkable biodiversity, it’s affinities don’t stop there, with its drier monsoon forests & savannah’s being home to other avifauna more synonymous with Indochina than Indonesia. Java has also had a long enough isolation to support many endemics, nearly 40 species, it’s misty volcanic mountain forests are packed full of spectacular endemics & even its lowlands hold a few specialties including many near endemics. It is a diverse birding destination with many different habitats and a distinct change in avifauna from west to east. Java also has the unfortunate distinction of being home to some incredibly endangered birds, Javan Laughingthrushes, Black-winged Starlings and many others the victims of the bird-trapping industry, and other’s such as the Javan blue-banded Kingfisher & Zebra Woodpecker due to habitat loss.
