Birding papua

The second largest island on earth, & one of the least explored, New Guinea holds more endemic bird species than any other, and holds a collection of some of the most stunning & bizarre bird species anywhere. Papua is the western half of the island & shares most of its species with neighbouring Papua New Guinea; Birds of Paradise, Cassowaries, many endemic families, some of the world’s most spectacular & diverse members of the Kingfisher, Pigeon & Parrot families. However due to New Guinea’s rugged topography, including the highest mountains between the Andes & the Himalayas, and a collection of isolated island groups, Papua also has a host of its own endemics- some of which are known as some of the world’s most sort-after birds. Incomparable species such as Wilson’s Bird-of-Paradise, Western Crowned Pigeon & Biak Paradise Kingfisher are all only found in the Papuan region, plus many more, all within a community of some of the world’s most diverse & finest birds. Each area of the lowlands to the high peaks holds its own unique assemblage, & all are not to be missed. With ever improving access & facilities, birding in Papua is truly the pinnacle of excellence & adventure
