Maluku’s complex geography is key to its incredible biodiversity. Many large islands & island groups with different lineages, all isolated from each other, has resulted in many unique & exquisite forms. Still in Wallacea, but with a definitive Australasian feel to its fauna, Maluku has many parrots, honeyeaters, oriole’s & even Birds-of-Paradise. The stunning rainforest’s of the Northern group hold an incredible near 50 endemics including some of Indonesia’s most sort after species like the incomparable Wallace’s Standard-wing & Ivory-breasted Pitta & also some elusive & mythical birds such as the Invisible Rail & Moluccan Woodcock. In the centre, the hulking masses of Buru & Seram also hold many spectacular endemics, their mossy forests hiding such rarities as the fascinating Madanga & nearly unknown Seram Thrush as well as many parrots, kingfishers & Wallacean specialties such as the Long-crested Myna. The drier southern group have a more Australian flavour & hold some truly remote birding with little known species that are now more accessible than ever. A journey through Maluku is a special Indonesian journey, often with spectacular scenery, good accommodation & still a great taste of adventure, and with nearly 140 endemics & many other beautiful highlights it is a spectacular place to go birding.
