Birding Sulawesi

Sulawesi is Indonesia’s counterpart to Madagascar, it’s chaotic creation & isolation leading to an extreme biological experiment, it is the centerpiece of Wallacea, where the fauna & flora of Asia & Australasia meet & then have been held in deep isolation, resulting in a dizzying array of unique species & forms. Sulawesi & it’s surrounding islands hold more endemic birds than any other region in Indonesia, with some of the highest endemicity found anywhere on earth. Due to the island’s bizarre geography, each peninsula & island group hold’s it’s own unique cast of avifauna & many of these are bizarre & spectacular. The lowlands are packed with highly desirable families such as hornbills, pittas, parrots & kingfishers. The charismatic Maleo, a unique megapode that buries its gigantic eggs in volcanic sand being perhaps the most emblematic of Sulawesi’s birds. The island’s mountains hold another entire cast of endemics, including some deep endemics like the Hylocitrea, a unique family to the island. The islands off of Sulawesi hold some of the world’s most enigmatic & rarest birds, such as the Cerulean Paradise Flycatcher- now thought to be most closely related to the silktails of Fiji, Talaud Rail & the rediscovered Banggai Crow. Looking for these precious jewels in some of the world’s most breathtaking island scenery is an adventure to remember. Recently, sightings of mythical birds, such as the Snoring Rail & Sulawesi Ground Dove have started to surface with new sites being discovered. Now is an excellent time to discover some of the world’s best birding in one of the most stunning & unique places on the planet.
