Birding kalimantan

Borneo holds some of the world’s most spectacular bird assemblages, from mighty hornbills, secretive pheasants, the world’s pitta hotspot & many beautiful montane endemics, it is a well- known stop on the world’s birding trail. Kalimantan, however, receives little attention in this regard, it lacks the infrastructure and comparative ease of finding targets that the Malaysian provinces of the island can provide. This provides a little discovered world of opportunity to adventurous birders to find some of Borneo’s rarest birds. Kalimantan has the vast majority of Borneo’s peat swamp, making it one of the best places to see peat forest specialists that are rarely seen elsewhere. It’s grand forest reserves still hold almost all of Borneo’s special diversity, they just take a bit more time to reveal their secrets. Add to this the recent surveys in the Meratus mountains, which have uncovered incredible discoveries, including 2 new bird species in just 2021 and also the rediscovery of the Black-browed Wren Babbler after decades of mystery. This isolated mountain range surely holds more surprises with the bird list growing on each visit. Other remote reserves are full of other rarely seen species such as Bornean Peacock Pheasant, White-shouldered Ibis, Bornean Crestless Fireback, Bulwer’s Pheasant & Hose’s Broadbill. If you are after adventure with a dose of wildlife, looking to tread where few have or are on the hunt for some special endemics, then Kalimantan awaits.
